UTOPIA stands for Urban Target Outreach Project In America. As a not-for-profit organization, UTOPIA works in conjunction with Salem Church to provide an outreach to the New York City community. It is funded entirely through grants, donations, and proceeds from events. Our current outreach projects include:
Kids' Night
Each Friday night from Sept.-Dec. and, again from, April-June, we host a kid's night at Salem in the fellowship hall. This evening includes a short Bible lesson and sports games in the gym where everyone gets involved and has a blast. We end the evening with a "make-your-own-sundae" dessert!
Safe Horizon Holiday Dinner
Each year, prior to Christmas, we host the Safe Horizon Holiday Dinner. UTOPIA invites two hundred victims of domestic violence to celebrate the holidays in the Tom Maddox Sports Center at Salem Church. This evening is a joint effort between Safe Horizon, Salem Church and a number of Catholic churches on Staten Island to provide toys and a holiday meal for the women and children who attend.
Summer Camps
Each summer UTOPIA presents four weeks of summer camps for children, ages 4-13 hosted at Salem Church. We have a two-week basketball camp, a one-week music camp, and a one-week kids' camp. All camps are intended to increase your child's faith while providing a fun and safe environment for the summer. There is a fee for the camps to cover the cost of activities and materials. Scholarships are provided for those with financial needs.
Upward Basketball
Upward Basketball is a basketball league with over two hundred children participating from the Staten Island community. Upward is committed to equipping believers to share the gospel through sports ministry. The purpose is to help every child grow in their love for Jesus Christ and in their understanding and enjoyment of sports. This ministry takes place during the months of January, February, and March in the Tom Maddox Sports Center at Salem Church. There is a fee for the basketball league that covers the cost of materials. Scholarships are provided for those with financial needs.
