Passage:Exodus 20:14

Preacher: John Welborn

Series: X-Factor

Detail:

August 7, 2016             Pastor John Welborn The X-Factor: Love God, Love People Yield to God’s Design Exodus 20:14
“Sex is the American obsession. It is in fact the drug of choice. While the Puritans may have lived as though there were no such thing as sex, Americans live as though there’s nothing else but sex.” Tony Evans
“You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” James 4:4
“For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” Mark 8:38
“Just as there are guardrails on a highway, designed to keep a wreck from occurring, God has put the guardrail of marriage around sex to keep wrecks from occurring.” Tony Evans
“Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table.” Psalm 128:3
I. God Designed Sex for Marriage  “You shall not commit adultery.”   Exodus 20:14
“The eye of the adulterer also waits for the twilight, saying, ‘No eye will see me’; and he veils his face.” Job 24:15
• God Commands Sex within the Confines of Marriage “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.” Gen 2:24-25
“But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise, the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self control.”  1 Cor 7:2-5
• God Prohibits Sex outside the Confines of Marriage  “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”  1 Corinthians 6:9-10
Sexual Sin is Wrong for Several Reasons: • It’s a Physical Sin “Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.”  1 Corinthians 6:18
• It’s a Marital Sin “Like a bird that strays from its nest is a man who strays from his home.” Proverbs 27:8
• It’s a Spiritual Sin “…How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” Gen 39:9b
“Develop the following conviction in your heart: There will be no sex before marriage, no sex without marriage & sex only after marriage.” James Merritt
• It’s a Mental Sin “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matthew 5:27-28
II. God Designed Marriage for Life “You shall not commit adultery.” Exodus 20:14
“Because the LORD was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant.” Malachi 2:14
“So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” Matthew 19:6
“Perhaps in no other area is the contrast of Christian living more plainly seen than in the unusual purity that a Christian keeps in his or her sexual life, remaining a virgin before marriage, and remaining faithful to one wife or husband until death parts that union. Yes, believe it or not, couples such as this exist!”  Edmund Clowney
“And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:11
