Passage:Genesis 2:1-3

Preacher: John Welborn

Series: 9 to 5: Does God Care about My Job?

9 to 5: Does God care about My Job? Work as God Designed It Genesis 2:1-3, 15
“Religion improved job performance only when the workers indicated that their church stressed demonstration of their faith in their workplace. By that, the researchers did not mean proselytism, but rather an emphasis on ‘sacrificial love’, the ‘eternal significance’ of work, and whether they believed that God wanted them to develop their abilities at work. Those who frequently attended such congregations also reported above-average levels of job satisfaction and commitment to their employer.” Juliette Willow, HRM America
I. Work is Part of God’s Character   “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.”  Genesis 2:1-3
“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.” Isaiah 40:28
“O Lord GOD, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours?” Deuteronomy 3:24
“Hear this, O Job; stop and consider the wondrous works of God.” Job 37:14
“But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.” Psalm 73:28
“But Jesus answered them, ‘My Father is working until now, and I am working.’” John 5:17
“In the beginning, then, God worked. Work was not a necessary evil that came into the picture later, or something human beings were created to do but that was beneath the great God himself. No, God worked for the sheer joy of it. Work could not have a more exalted inauguration.” Timothy Keller
II. God Left His Work Incomplete on Purpose
“The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it…”  Genesis 2:15a
“And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’ Genesis 1:28b
“In the creation accounts we find in Genesis, we see God setting the stage & then turning over the cosmos to human beings to continue to manage & develop. The work of building this world is a divine-human partnership.” Chip Roper
“Though all God made was good, it was still to a great degree undeveloped.” Timothy Keller
“God could easily give you grain and fruit without your plowing and planting, but he does not want to do so.” Martin Luther
“For we are God’s fellow workers.” 1 Corinthians 3:9a
“The same God who ordains the end – a beautiful garden – also ordains the means to the end – someone to do the work.” Warren Wiersbe
“…faith apart from works is dead.” James 2:26b
III. God Created Me to Work
“...and keep it.” Genesis 2:15b
“Work…is an indispensable component in a meaningful human life. It is a supreme gift from God and one of the main things that gives our lives purpose. But it must play its proper role, subservient to God. It must regularly give way not just to work stoppage for bodily repair but also to joyful reception of the world and of ordinary life.” Tim Keller
“The reason why men often find themselves happy & satisfied in the army is that for the first time in their lives they found themselves doing something, not for the pay, which is miserable, but for the sake of getting the thing done.”  Dorothy Sayers, Creed or Chaos?
“Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2
You can work in many fields and accomplish a great deal, but you cannot work your way into favor with God or forgiveness for sins. Those things can only be received, by faith, as a gift from God!
