Upward Sunday
“When God Gives You A Fresh Start”
Matthew 26
Chaplain Phillip Kelley
“I believe everyone deserves a chance to change their obituary in the middle of their life.” Alfred Nobel (founder of Nobel Peace Prize)
“His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22b-23
Peter was one of Jesus’ closest friends and was a part of the “inner 3 disciples”:Peter, James and John. While Peter was the leader and the spokesman for the group, he had a tendency to write checks with his mouth that his actions couldn’t cash.
31Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'32But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." 33Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you" 34"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." 35But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you And all the other disciples said the same.”
Matthew 26:31-35
69 “Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said. 70But he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said. 71Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth." 72He denied it again, with an oath: "I don't know the man!"73After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, "Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away." 74Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I don't know the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed. [The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter (Luke 22:61)]. 75Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.” Matthew 26:69-75 (with Luke 22:61)
5 “As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6"Don't be alarmed," he said. "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.' "
Mark 16:5-7
“But go, tell his disciples AND PETER…” The angel singles Peter out of the crowd because he’s the one who needs the most grace and encouragement because he had just blown it the most.
The angel declares, “Go tell the disciples and…
· the one who thinks he doesn’t deserve it…
· the one who has failed too many times…
· the one who thinks there is no hope for…
· the one who thinks that he was to work his way back into good graces with God…
· Go tell “that one” that HE IS RISEN!!!”
9 “When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others…11But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12Peter, however, Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.”
Luke 24:9-12
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.”John 21:15-17
Jesus was telling him emphatically, “Peter I know that you have denied me three times. That’s why I want you to know that I love you…Three times over! In your response to your forgiveness, I want you to take leadership over the church. I want you to feed my flock (my spiritual flock, my church) and I want you to pastor these people into truth! I want you to proclaim my Word to the world with POWER and ANOINTING. Peter, I want to use YOU because you have a story of GRACE, not PERFECTION.”
The next time we see Peter, we see him preaching, filled with the Holy Spirit, in unbelievable power and anointing…
“Then Peter stood up…raised his voice and addressed the crowd…Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.”
Acts 2:14,41
Today, this is your day for a fresh start. God wants to give you a fresh start so He can use you in unbelievable ways. Ways that you can only dream of.
