Passage:Luke 5:1-11

Preacher: John Welborn

Series: 9 to 5: Does God Care about My Job?

9 to 5: Does God care about My Job? Trust Jesus with All of It Luke 5:1-11
“The separation of work-life from the values and principles of faith is called the vocational divide. The vocational divide is an approach to work by individuals that is reinforced by institutions and geography…Compartmentalization is built into the system.” Chip Roper (NYC Leadership Council)
I. Working Apart from Jesus is Mundane “On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fisherman had gone out of them and were washing their nets.” Luke 5:1-2

“Without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists & that he rewards those who seek him.” Hebrews 11:6

II. Working Near to Jesus is Encouraging “Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down & taught the people from the boat.” Luke 5:3

“Peter kept working while Jesus used his ship as a platform from which to address the huge crowd on the shore…but, in a short time, Peter would have to exercise faith, and Jesus was preparing him.” Warren Wiersbe

3 downsides to living the vocational divide: • Being a Vocational Orphan • Embracing a Vocational Myth
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:15-17 • Accepting Vocational Limitations
“God places in each human being gifts, opportunities, and his image. Releasing our God-given potential in the work place can change the world.” Chip Roper

III. Working With Jesus is Filled with Wonder “And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.’ And Simon answered, ‘Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.’ And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, ‘Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.’ For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to
Simon, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.’ And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.” Luke 5:4-11

“In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2:3
“Freedom is not so much the absence of restrictions as finding the right ones…So the commandments of God in the Bible are a means of liberation, because through them God calls us to be what he built us to be.” Timothy Keller
“I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your well-being like the waves of the sea.” Isaiah 48:17b-18 (NIV)
