The Treasure of Money

Passage:Luke 12:13-21

Preacher: John Welborn

Series: The Treasure Principle

“The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,” Psalm 24:1
I. Greed says, “It’s All About the Stuff!”  “Someone in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.’ But he said to him, ‘Man who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?’ And he said to them, ‘Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.’”  Luke 12:13-15
“Who one is is far more important than what one possesses.” Warren Wiersbe
“As an older man I have listened to thousands of confessions and I have yet to hear one person confess to the sin of covetousness.” Father Frances Xavier
“Covetousness is an insidious sin. It can destroy your marriage, wreck your family, ruin your health, and grease the skids on the road to hell.”  James Merritt
“He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this is also vanity.” Ecclesiastes 5:10
II. Fear says, “It’s All About the Future!”  “And he told them a parable, saying, ‘The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’”  Luke 12:16-19
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils.” 1 Timothy 6:10a
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matt 6:19-21
“You don’t have to be rich to be generous, you have to be generous to be generous.” Pastor Johnny Hunt
III. God says, “It’s All About Eternity!”  “But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”  Luke 12:20-21
“Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.” Proverbs 13:11
“On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper....” 1 Corinthians 16:2
“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” Luke 12:21
“Being rich toward God means to acknowledge gratefully that everything we have comes from God, and then make an effort to use what He gives us for the good of others and the glory of God.” Warren Wiersbe
How does one begin to build wealth toward God?  The Three P’s: 1) Priority (give first), 2) Percentage (proportional), &  3) Progressive (don’t get comfortable)
“The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,” Psalm 24:1
God is not most interested in your time, your influence or your money because His greatest treasure is YOU! He proved this when he sent his only Son, Jesus, to pay the ultimate sacrifice for your sins.
You will never fully take control of your time, your influence or your money until you surrender to God’s complete control of You!
