The Big Picture Restoration
2 Peter 3:13-14
Pastor John Welborn
“The restoration of the world has already begun, but has not yet fully taken place. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus, the life of heaven has invaded earth. The kingdom of God has begun to advance.”
Trevin Wax
“In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, & believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”
Ephesians 1:13-14
I. Everything will be New in God’s Restoration Promise
“But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.”
2 Peter 3:13
“Blessed are you when others revile you & persecute you & utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice & be glad, for your reward is great in heaven...”
Matthew 5:11-12a
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.’ And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’”
Revelation 21:1-5a
“Jesus Christ is coming back. Throughout the centuries, the reality of that wonderful promise has formed the crux of Christian expectation...On the basis of all that God has in store for them, believers ought to live in constant expectation – always looking for Christ’s return and continually viewing everything in this life in light of their eternal destiny.”
John MacArthur
II. There is a Place for You in God’s Restoration Plan
“Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.”
2 Peter 3:14
Peter warns: be diligent to be found in Him. This tells us 3 things:
We cannot take this lightly (be diligent: eagerly desire)
We cannot sit-out God’s restoration plan (found: God will find you!)
There is a right way & a wrong way to be found:
o Right Way: In Christ – Those who have been redeemed! They are spotless, without blemish & at peace!
“Be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.”
Philippians 3:9
“Therefore since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Romans 5:1
o Wrong Way: Not In Christ – Unredeemed (unsaved), carrying the weight of our sin & unable to find peace with God!
“And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”
Revelation 20:15
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 8:1
“For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”
Romans 10:13
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
2 Corinthians 5:17
Are you hungry for hope and starving for peace? There’s only one way to get it:
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy & peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”
Romans 15:13
