Passage:Ephesians 6:14

Preacher: John Welborn

Series: The Art of War

The Art of War

The Art of Truth

Ephesians 6:14a

Pastor John Welborn

Main Idea: Truth is the foundation for all spiritual victories.

“For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments & every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, & take every thought captive to obey Christ.”

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (ESV)

Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth...”

Ephesians 6:14a

There are Two Essential Elements to Truth

I. The Function of Truth

“Stand therefore, having fastened on…” 14a

“To put on the belt of truth can be understood as accepting the truth of the Bible & choosing to follow it with integrity.”

Max Anders

Fasten On the Belt:  A Roman Soldier’s Belt had several functions

  • Tie Up Loose Ends:  A Roman soldier’s ‘underwear’ was a tunic. It was light, comfortable & kept him cool. But, as you can imagine, it was not easy to run, fight or maneuver while wearing this tunic. Before battle, the solider would tuck in the loose ends to fight.
  • Make the Weapons Accessible: A sword would hang in its sheath from the belt & a dagger would be concealed, too.
  • Provide Stability: Think of a weight lifter tying a belt tightly around his waist before lifting a heavy weight. Or, imagine you leaving the house forgetting to put on your belt. You are unsettled all day.

II. The Nature of Truth

  • Emotions: What feels true is true. The major problem with this line of thinking is that our feelings are so inconsistent & cannot be trusted. Emotions are real, but they are a horrible standard of truth!
  • Intellect: What makes sense is true. The major problem here is that no matter how smart you are, there is always more to learn. And, every few years what we thought we knew, turns out we didn’t know.
  • Culture: What the majority decides is true. Do we really want to trust the mob to decide right & wrong? Not only that, but which culture do you trust? In some places of the world, they kill people for merely saying something offensive & the culture supports it.
  • Relationships: What my friends/family say is true. There’s a reason that you’re not allowed to practice medicine on your family. You cannot be objective when it comes to people closest to you.

Remember Your Enemy: The majority of what the Bible tells us about the devil is regarding his relationship to the truth. Consider:

“…Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”

2 Corinthians 11:14b (ESV)

“You are of your father the devil…he has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar & the father of lies.”

John 8:44 (ESV)

“In their case the god of this world has blinded the mindsof the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

2 Corinthians 4:4 (ESV)

“And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil & Satan, thedeceiver of the whole world– he was thrown down to the earth & his angels were thrown down with him.”

Revelation 12:9 (ESV)

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)

“And you will know the truth, & the truth will set you free.”

John 8:32 (ESV)

Three Things You Need to Know About Truth

  • Truth Begins with God: Truth isn’t merely info/facts correlating to reality; it’s God’s original intent. Search for Truth=Search for God
  • Truth has Been Pre-Determined by God: Truth isn’t on trial. In our world, knowledge changes (diets change, scientific discover evolves, technology updates, etc). The devil wants you to believe that truth is constantly evolving as well.
  • Truth is Embraced Internally Before Affecting You Externally: Cultivating inward honesty about who we are, what motivates us, how we sin, where we’re tempted, mistakes we’ve made & what issues we deal with is part of putting on the belt of truth! We must be truthful with ourselves, with others & most importantly with God!

“So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God & man.”

Acts 24:16 (ESV)

“Just as my mouth can taste good food, so my mind tastes truth when I hear it.”

Job 12:11 (The Living Bible)

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, & the truth, & the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”

John 14:6 (ESV)
