Ephesians 6:17

Review of the Spiritual Armor from our Art of War series

  • Art of Preparation: Trust God, Know the Armor, Identify Enemy
  • Art of Truth: Truth holds it all together
  • Art of Righteousness: Not self-righteousness. Perfect & Practical
  • Art of Faith: Intellectual Assent & Personal Trust. Interlocking.
  • Art of Salvation: Justification, Sanctification, Glorification

“Finally, be strong in the Lord & in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh & blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, & having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, & having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

Ephesians 6:10-17

Main Idea: I can attack the enemy with the Word of God in all my Spiritual Battles

There are Two Parts to the Word of God in Ephesians 6:17

I. The Function of the Word

“...and the sword of the Spirit...”17b

“The best form of defense is attack.”

Napoleon Bonaparte

“I write to you, young men, because you are strong, & the word of God abides in you, & you have overcome the evil one.”

1 John 2:14b

“This final piece of armor stands out from all of the others. It’s unique because this is the only offensive weapon in the arsenal.”

Tony Evans

II. The Nature of the Word

“...which is the word of God.” 17c

The Writings Graphea reference to the actual manuscripts of the scripture, the Bible itself.

“All scripture is breathed out by God & profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, & for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17

The MessageLogosrefers to the message of the writings.

“For the word of God (logos) is living & active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul & of spirit, of joints & of marrow, & discerning the thoughts & intentions of the heart.”

Hebrews 4:12

The Utterance “Rhema”specific declaration concerning the writings & the message. It’s God’s word for you, specifically.

“Remember the word that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, ‘The LORD your God is providing you a place of rest & will give you this land.’”

Joshua 1:13

“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days & forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came & said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’ But he answered, ‘It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’’”

Matthew 4:1-4

“Then the devil took him to the holy city & set him on the pinnacle of the temple & said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’’ Jesus said to him, Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’’”

Matthew 4:5-7

“Again, the devil took him to a very height mountain & showed him all the kingdoms of the world & their glory. And he said to him, ‘All these I will give you, if you will fall down & worship me.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Be gone, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God & him only shall you serve.’’”

Matthew 4:8-10

“The more you use a physical sword, the duller it becomes; but using God’s Word only makes it sharper in our lives.”

Warren Wiersbe

There is great confidence available in putting on the whole armor of God, including the sword of the Spirit. This is the kind of victory that Jesus has purchased for you by his death & resurrection. Jesus is the hero of this war that he has fought for you, will fight for you and isfighting for you even now! That is the true ART OF WAR!
