The Art of Salvation

Ephesians 6:17a

“Finally, be strong in the Lord & in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh & blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, & having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, & having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation...”

Ephesians 6:10-16

Main Idea - The Helmet of Salvation secures my confidence in all spiritual battles

There are Two Parts to Salvation in Ephesians 6:17a:

  1. The Function of Salvation – “and take up the helmet...” 17a

  2. The Nature of Salvation – “...of salvation...” 17b

There are three types of Salvation:

Justification – A past event that saved us from sin’s penalty.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Ephesians 2:8-9

Trusting in Jesus Christ immediately saves from the penalty of sin. For believers, this first aspect of salvation, which is justification, is past. It was accomplished the moment we trusted in Christ, & that particular act of faith need never be repeated, because we are secure in our Father’s hands – from whom we can never be snatched. We are forever saved...”

John MacArthur

Sanctification – An ongoing process that saves from sin’s power.

“Therefore put away all filthiness & rampant wickedness & receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”

James 1:21

“Christ’s death saves us once & for all from sin’s penalty, & his life within us now is saving us day to day from sin’s power & mastery.”

John MacArthur

Glorification – A future reality that saves us from sin’s presence.

“Beloved, we are God’s children now, & what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.”

1 John 3:2

“The third aspect of salvation is future, the aspect of glorification, when we shall one day be saved altogether & forever from sin’s presence.”

John MacArthur

“Blessed be the God & Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again (have been saved – Justification)to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, & unfading, kept in heaven for you(will be saved – Glorification), who by God’s power are being guarded through faith (am being saved – Sanctification) for a salvation to be revealed in the last time.”

1 Peter 1:3-5

“Having put on the breastplate of faith & love, & for a helmet the hope of salvation.”

1 Thessalonians 5:8b

“We ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved.”

Romans 8:23b-24a
