The Art of Righteousness
Ephesians 6:14b

“He put on righteousness as a breastplate, & a helmet of salvation on his head; he put on garments of vengeance for clothing, & wrapped himself in zeal as a cloak. According to their deeds, so will he repay, wrath to his adversaries, repayment to his enemies; to the coastlands he will render repayment. So they shall fear the name of the LORD from the west, & his glory from the rising of the sun; for he will come like a rushing stream, which the wind of the LORD drives.”
Isaiah 59:17-19

“Your armor is Yahweh’s own armor – given as a gift & empowered by His Spirit to ensure victory.”
Priscila Shirer

“Finally, be strong in the Lord & in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh & blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, & having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, & having put on the breastplate of righteousness.”
Ephesians 6:10-14

Main Idea:  Righteousness protects my heart in all spiritual battles.

There are Two Parts to Righteousness:

I. The Function of Righteousness - “...and having put on the breastplate...” Ephesians 6:14b
The Enemy is Targeting Our Hearts on Four Levels (Shirer):

  • My Mind
  • My Will
  • My Emotions
  • My Conscience

Assuming that you have heard about him & were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life & is corrupt through deceitful desires, & to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, & to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness & holiness.”
Ephesians 4:21-24

II. The Nature of Righteousness –  “...of righteousness.” 14c

“For the LORD is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold
his face.”
Psalm 11:7

Three Types of Righteousness in the Bible:

Self-Righteousness: vain, boasting, prideful display of personal piety that God abhors

“We have all become like one who is unclean, & all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment...”
Isaiah 64:6a

“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, & the truth is not in us.”
1 John 1:8

Perfect Righteousness: cannot be earned & is not deserved; it can only be received as a gift.

“For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace & the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.”
Romans 5:17

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
2 Corinthians 5:21

Practical Righteousness: obedience to God’s word, requiring Godly thinking, behaving & speaking. It will never be perfect, but it must be present & growing in the Christ follower!

“Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices & have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator...Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy & beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, & patience, bearing with one another &, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”
Colossians 3:9-10, 12-14

“The completeness of pardon for past offence & the integrity of character that belong to the justified life, are woven together into an impenetrable mail.”
G.G. Findlay

“For the believer, Satan cannot take away your imputed righteousness, what he tries to do is restrict your personal practice of righteousness. He knows he can’t take away your standing before God, so he looks for a way to break your fellowship with God by causing a breach between your position of righteousness & your practice of righteousness.”
Tony Evans

“Therefore put away all filthiness & rampant wickedness & receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”
James 1:21

God has given you his own breastplate of righteousness to protect your heart in battle; it is time to put it on!
