The Art of WarThe Art of Peace

Ephesians 6:15

Pastor John Welborn

“Finally, be strong in the Lord & in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh & blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, & having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, & having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.”

Ephesians 6:10-15

Main Idea - The good news of peace prepares me to stand up to the bad days.

There are Two Parts to Peace:

I. The Function of Peace

And, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given...” Ephesians 6:15a

“Having your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace creates a stability that even Satan cannot undo.”

Tony Evans

II. The Nature of Peace

“...by the gospel of peace.” Ephesians 6:15b

Peace WITH God: The most important type of peace, fundamental!

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Romans 5:1

“But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one & has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.”

Ephesians 2:13-16

Peace OF God: Being able to tap into God’s peace at any time!

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

John 14:27

“The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer & supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts & your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:5b-7

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”

Isaiah 26:3

Shalom: a state of wholeness, completeness & wellness that is synonymous with the presence of God.

Peace isn’t the absence of pressure & pain; it’s the presence of God!

“O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

Daniel 3:16b-18

“Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished & rose up in haste. He declared to his counselors, ‘Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?’ They answered & said to the king, ‘True, O king.’ He answered & said, ‘But I see four menunbound, walking in the midst of the fire, & they are not hurt; & the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.’”

Daniel 3:24-25

Conclusion - Following Jesus has put you in a daily spiritual battle with the devil & the demons of hell. They are coming after your feet, to take you out!

“The thief comes only to steal & kill & destroy...”

John 10:10a

We can be victorious in this battle because we have peace with God & the peace of God bought for us in the gospel of Jesus Christ!

“Earth recedes. Heaven opens before me. If this is death, it is sweet! There is no valley here. God is calling me, & I must go. This is my triumph; this is my coronation day! It is glorious!”

D.L. Moody

“I have pain; but I have peace, I have peace!”

Richard Baxter

“Our God is the God from whom cometh salvation. God is the Lord by whom we escape death! Into Thy hands I commit my spirit; God of truth, thou hast redeemed me!”

Martin Luther

How is it possible to have such peace in what would otherwise be such a fearful, tumultuous & painful time? Only the good news of Peace withGod & the Peace of God can bring such confidence in the face of this world! Put on your shoes & be prepared for anything this life throws at you.
