The Art of War - The Art of Faith

Ephesians 6:16

Pastor John Welborn

“Finally, be strong in the Lord & in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh & blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, & having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, & having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;”

Ephesians 6:10-16

Main Idea - Active faith shields me from the attacks of the enemy.

There are Two Parts to Faith in Ephesians 6:16

I. The Function of Faith
“In all circumstances take up the shield...with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;”

Ephesians 6:16a

What this series has taught us so far about preparing for spiritual battle:

  • The Spiritual Battle is Won or Lost in the Preparation

  • Belt: Truth is the Foundation for All Spiritual Battles

  • Breastplate: Righteousness Protects my Heart in Spiritual Battles

  • Shoes: Peace prepares me to stand up to the Bad Days

“Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, & having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, & the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Ephesians 6:14-17

“The edges of these shields were so constructed that an entire line of soldiers could interlock shields & march into the enemy like a solid wall.” Warren Wiersbe

“God himself ‘is a shield to those who take refuge in him’, and it is by faith that we flee to him for refuge. Faith lays hold of the promises of God in times of doubt and depression, and faith lays hold of the power of God in times of temptation.”
John Stott

“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith.”
1 John 5:4

II. The Nature of Faith“...of faith...”

Ephesians 6:16b

Definition: “Complete trust or confidence in someone or something.”

“Faith is acting as though God were telling the truth.”

Priscilla Shirer

“Faith is believing that something is so, when it’s not so, so that it becomes so, because God said so.”

Tony Evans

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Hebrews 11:1

Faith Carries Two Ideas:

  • Intellectual Assent: Believing something to be true

  • Personal Trust: Relying on the truth believed

“...the righteous shall live by his faith.”

Habbakuk 2:4b (also found in Romans 1, Galatians 3 & Hebrews 1

Daily Faith: You intellectually assent to the truth that God’s ways are perfect & yours are not, SO you personally trust by daily following His word.

“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me & gave himself for me.”

Galatians 2:20

“We must pray for the gift of Faith, for the power to go on believing not in the teeth of reason but in the teeth of lust.”

C.S. Lewis

“By faith Abel offered...By faith Noah constructed an ark...By faith Abrahamobeyed...By faith Isaac invoked...By faith Joseph made...By faith Moses chose to be mistreated...By faith the people crossed the Red Sea...By Faith the walls of Jericho fell...By faith Rahab gave a friendly welcome to the spies...”

Hebrews 11

“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists & that he rewards those who seek him.”

Hebrews 11:6

“And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Put out into the deep & let down your nets for a catch.”

Luke 5:4

“And Simon answered, ‘Master, we toiled all night & took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”

Luke 5:5

“And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, & their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come & help them. And they came & filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.”

Luke 5:6-7

The Principle of Faith
Faith means acting on what God says in spite of what you know, your background, your experience, your education.
