Passage:Exodus 20:12

Preacher: Josiah Maddox

Series: X-Factor

The X-Factor: Love God, Love People Remember Who You Belong To Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” Exodus 20:12 1. You Belong to Your Family “First, the family is the basic social unit; no nation is stable or virile where family life is weak. Second, the family is the basic spiritual unit in which God makes parents their children’s pastors and teachers.” J. I. Packer • Learn “It is often said, and it is so clearly true, that our relationship with our parents in terms of the most formative period of our lives will, to a great degree, indicate our relationship with God.” R. Albert Mohler Jr. “Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck.” Proverbs 1:8-9 • Love “Parents are too busy to give time to their children, and young people, identifying with current ‘youth’ culture, are more prone than ever to write off their parents as clueless old fuddy-duddies…But none may claim to love their neighbor while they shrug off their parents.” J. I. Packer “Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,“Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God. You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” Matthew 15:1-9 “And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)— then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.” Mark 7:9-13 • Live “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise),“that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:1-4 “My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.” Proverbs 3:1-2 “This promise was given to the nation of Israel, but it applies to any nation. God knows the right kind of children will become the right kind of citizens. The right kind of citizens will bring the blessing of God upon a nation.” James Merritt “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12:11 2. You Belong to God’s Family “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12 “In the power of the Holy Spirit, who raised Christ from the dead, we can bring honor to our family name – ‘Christian.’” Edmund P. Clowney “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness.” - Zephaniah 3:17a “The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.” - Psalm 147:11 “In this [salvation] you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 1:6-7 “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” 2 Corinthians 5:20 Do you belong to God’s family? Jesus made the way for you to be adopted in.
