Need to Know: A Series from 1 JohnWinning & Losing

1 John 5:1-12

Main Idea - You need to know that Victory is Found in the Son of God!

I. Victory Begins in Knowing Who to Believe and Believing!

“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is he who came by water & blood – Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit & the water & the blood; and these three agree. If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son.”

John 5:4-10

“But God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden...lest you die.’ But the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die.”

Genesis 3:3-4

John notes three testaments to Jesus’ Identity as the Son of God:

• Water – A reference to Jesus’ baptism. John was an eyewitness.

“And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, & behold, the heavens were opened to him, & he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove & coming to rest on him; & behold, a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.’”

Matthew 3:16-17

Blood – A reference to the death of Jesus on the cross.
“Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour...And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, ‘Truly this was the Son of God!’”

Matthew 27:45, 51-54

Spirit – A reference to the work of the Holy Spirit.
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

John 16:12-14

“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”

Romans 8:16

“The law required two or three witnesses for a matter to be settled. The Father witnessed at the baptism & at the cross, and the Spirit witnesses today within the believer. The spirit, the water, and the blood settle the matter: Jesus is God.”

Warren Wiersbe

II. Victory is Assured in Knowing What to Do and Doing it!

“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, & everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God & obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.”

John 5:1-3

“Praise the LORD from the earth, you great sea creatures & all deeps, fire & hail, snow & mist, stormy wind fulfilling his word!”

Psalm 148:7-8

“In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches.”

Psalm 119:14

“Those who love God will obey His law, because they want to honor His holy nature. They do so not out of dread, but out of loving adoration.”

John MacArthur

III. Victory is Enjoyed in Abundant Life and Living it!

“And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, & this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

1 John 5:11-12

“The thief comes only to steal & kill & destroy. I have come that they may have life & have it abundantly.”

John 10:10

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ – by grace you have been saved.”

Ephesians 2:4-5

Will you experience victory today? You can if you know who to believe, what to do & how to live in a relationship with Jesus Christ!

That’s the Difference Between Winning & Losing!
