Need to Know: A Series from 1 John - Love & Fear

1 John 4:7-21

“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.” Ephesians 5:3 (NIV)

“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer & all the sexually immoral.” Hebrews 13:4 (NIV)

“Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.”
1 Corinthians 6:18 (NIV)

In order to follow Jesus, it is imperative that you know what love is AND what love is NOT!!! Love is love & sex is sex. Don’t confuse the two! Now that we’ve cleared that up, who are we supposed to love???

Main Idea:
You need to know that we love because He first loved us.

I. The Origin of Love
“In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.” 1 John 4:9-13

What Does the Bible affirm about God?

  • God is One “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!”

Deuteronomy 6:4 – We are Monotheists to the core!

  • The Father is God “...God the Father has set His seal on Him.”

    John 6:27b (NKJV)

  • The Son is God – “Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God & Savior Jesus Christ.” Titus 2:13 (NKJV)

  • The Spirit is God – “Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”                2 Corinthians 3:17

    What Does the Bible Reject?

  • The Father is God, Jesus is God Jr & The Spirit is God III

  • There are Multiple Gods

  • The Father, Son & Holy Spirit are not Distinct

“The one, eternal, and living God of the Bible, the only real God there is, is the God who has forever known himself, and who in the history of salvation has revealed himself to us, as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. To deny this truth is to lapse into heresy.”   Dr. Timothy George

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ & the love of God & the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”             2 Corinthians 13:14

“Amazing as it may seem, God’s love is not made perfect in angels, but in sinners saved by His grace. We Christians are now tabernacles & temples in which God dwells. He reveals His love through us.”  Warren Wiersbe

II. The Nature of Love
“And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:14-20

“The unseen God, who once revealed himself in his Son, now reveals himself in his people if and when they love one another...God’s love, which originates in himself and was manifested in his Son, is made complete in his people. It is ‘brought to perfection within us.’ God’s love for us is perfected only when it reproduces in us or ‘among us’ in the Christian fellowship.”   John Stott

“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword...No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, or angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Romans 8:35, 37-39

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”  Philippians 1:21

III. The Barrier to Love
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love...If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this is the commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”
1 John 4:7-8, 20-21

“We ought to be philanthropists, lovers of man, loving even the guilty & the worthless, having an earnest desire to do good even to those who do us ill.” Charles Haddon Spurgeon
