Need to Know: A Series from 1 John
Heaven & Earth
1 John 2:1-6

“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, & not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says ‘I know him’ but does not keep his commandments is a liar, & the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”
1 John 2:1-6

I. Jesus Changes My Position in Heaven –
“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.”
1 John 2:1-2

“For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me...Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?”
Romans 7:19-20, 24

“Saints are, without exception, still sinners...In some sense Jesus is only mine when I can claim the name of sinner. I cannot have an advocate unless I do sin; I do not want one. Who wants an advocate to plead his cause in a court of law if there is no suit against him? Sin is a charge against me. I am a sinner; I have an advocate.”
Charles Haddon Spurgeon

John uses a powerful word, advocate, describing Jesus in verse
1. The picture John is painting is that of a courtroom with 4 people:
• Judge: God the Father, righteous & just.
“...God will not do wickedly, & the Almighty will not pervert justice.”
Job 34:12
• Prosecutor: The accuser, bringing evidence of wrongdoing is Satan.
“accuser of our brothers...who accuses them day & night before our God.”
Revelation 12:10
• Defendant: You & I are on trial. We’ve been accused & will be tried.
“So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.”
Romans 14:1
Defense Attorney: Advocate. Speaks for & alongside the accused.
“For there is no distinction; for all have sinned & fall short of the glory of God, & are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.”
Romans 3:22b-25a

“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow...”
Isaiah 1:18

My Position in Heaven and...

II. Jesus Changes My Life on Earth –
“And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says ‘I know him’ but does not keep his commandments is a liar, & the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”
1 John 2:3-6

“The first thing about a Christian is initiation, initiation into Christ; the next thing is imitation, the imitation of Christ. We cannot be Christians unless we are in Christ, & we are not truly in Christ unless in Him we live & move & have our being, & the life of Christ is lived over again by us according to our measure.”
Charles Haddon Spurgeon

“A slave obeys because he has to. If he doesn’t obey, he will be punished. An employee obeys because he needs to. He may not enjoy his work, but he does enjoy getting his paycheck! He needs to obey because he has a family to feed & clothe. But a Christian is to obey his Heavenly Father because he ‘wants’ to – for the relationship between him & God is one of love.”
Warren Wiersbe

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15“Sin is dejected in the Christian’s heart, though it is not ejected. Sin may enter
the heart, & fight for dominion, but it cannot sit upon the throne.”
CH Spurgeon

Jesus Changes my Position in Heaven & Jesus Changes my Life on Earth.

“He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.”
1 John 2:2

When you cling to anything other than Jesus, it is as eternally useless as a cobweb in the grasp of a climber. It will not hold! But Jesus Changes Everything! Will you, by faith, invite him to change you?
