Passage:Luke 10:25-37

Preacher: John Welborn

Series: Generosity

Generosity Live Generously with an Open Hand Luke 10:25-37 “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill, Former British Prime Minister “…the righteous is generous and gives:” Psalm 37:21 “It is well with the man who deals generously…” Psalm 112:5 “You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way…” 2 Cor 9:11 I. Thieves: What’s Yours is Mine; I’m going to Take It! “Jesus replied, ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead.’” Luke 10:30 “You shall not steal.” Exodus 20:15 (8th Commandment) “Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, but righteousness delivers from death.” Proverbs 10:2 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10 (Jesus) II. Selfish: What’s Mine is Mine; I’m going to Keep It! “Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.” Luke 10:31-32 “Thus says the LORD of hosts, ‘Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another.’” Zechariah 7:9 Possible Excuses for Selfishness:  Not the Right Time  What If…  What’s in it for Me III. Generous: What’s Mine is God’s; I’m going to Give It! “But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’” Luke 10:33-35 “And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, ‘Do not weep.’” Luke 7:13 (to a grieving mother, before he raised her son) Three Generosity Words:  Priority Giving “You don’t have to be rich to be generous. You have to be generous to be generous.” Johnny Hunt “The best way to make giving a priority is to make it the first check you write each month.” Andy Stanley  Percentage Giving “And he called his disciples to him and said to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.” Mark 12:43-44  Progressive Giving When it comes to giving, Practice the 3 P’s (Priority, Percentage & Progressive) and avoid the 3 S’s (Spontaneous, Sporadic & Sparing)!
