Preacher: John Welborn

Series: Hope Has a Name

Detail:

Hope Has a Name Jesus Offers Hope for Marriage 1 Peter 3:1-7
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.”  John 15:18
 I. There is Hope for Lost Spouses  “Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct.”  1 Peter 3:1-2

“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:22

Why is Submission such a Volatile term in the 21st Century? • Abuse & Injustice • Misunderstanding & Manipulation

“Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Ephesians 5:21

“Men and women are equally made in God’s image, have equal access to salvation, and share the same destiny. Similarly, the Son of God, Jesus Christ, is equal to the Father in essence, but he submits to the Father (1 Cor 15:28), revealing that he has a different role. The submission of wives, therefore, does not imply their inferiority. A different function does not suggest that they are less beings.”  Thomas R. Schreiner
II. There is Hope in Lasting Beauty  “Do not let your adorning be external – the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear – but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. For this is how the holy women who hoped in God use to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.”  1 Peter 3:3-6

“Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle & quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.”  1 Peter 3:4

“Marriage begins with a prince kissing an angel and ends with a baldheaded man sitting across the table from a fat lady.” Arab Proverb

“There is a beauty that never fades. There is a beauty that never grows old and is never tarnished by gray hair, false teeth, or a wrinkled face. Weather doesn’t decay it and time doesn’t age it. This is a beauty that gets lovelier and lovelier and is a beauty that looks better, smells nicer, and tastes sweeter with every passing day. It is the beauty of a quiet and gentle spirit that trusts God, walks with God, and radiates the very love of God.” James Merritt

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30
III. There is Hope for Prayers that Make a Difference  “Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.” 1 Peter 3:7

“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,” Ephesians 5:25

Three Imperatives for Husbands: • Dwell • Know • Honor

“He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.” Proverbs 18:22

“If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ & hates his brother, he is a liar…” 1 John 4:20a

There is hope for a lost spouse, for lasting beauty and for prayers that make a difference, but it is only found in Jesus Christ! Trust Him today.
