Detail:

January 15, 2017      Pastor John Welborn 9 to 5: Does God Care About My Job? It’s Time to Answer the Call 1 Corinthians 7:17
What is the Motivation for Your Job? Money? Status? Calling?
Many answers: • Further social justice in the world (clean water, fair trade, etc) • Be honest about my faith and share Jesus with my coworkers • Do skillful and excellent work • Create beauty • Glorify God, trying to engage and influence culture to that end • Work with a grateful, joyful, gospel-changed heart through ups & downs • Do whatever gives me the greatest joy and passion • Make as much money as I can, so that I can give more significantly

“There is a tendency for churches and organizations emphasizing faith and work to be somewhat unbalanced, emphasizing one or two of these story lines to the exclusion of the others.” Timothy Keller

I. The Call of God is Specific to Each Believer  “Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him…”   1 Corinthians 7:17a

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10
II. The Call of God is Equal for Every Believer  “…and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches.”  I Corinthians 7:17b

• God Calling Us to Salvation “God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:9
 • God Calling Us to the Mission of Disciple-Making “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you  out of darkness into his marvelous light.” 1 Peter 2:9
 • God Calling Us into His Church “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15
“Paul is not referring in this case to church ministries, but to common social and economic tasks – ‘secular jobs,’ we might say – and naming them God’s calling and assignments.” Timothy Keller

“My profession is to me a ministry from God.” Dr. Crawford W. Long

“No task will be [seen as] so sordid & base, provided you obey your calling in it, that it will not shine & be reckoned & very precious in God’s sight.”  John Calvin
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23-24

When you can’t find meaning or motivation in your work: • Ask God for a Heart Change “And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God.” Ezekiel 11:19-20
 • Be Open to a Career Change “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
You will never find true, lasting motivation in your work until you embrace the work that Jesus did on your behalf. It’s time to Answer the Call to Salvation!
