God Speaks: Major Messages from the Minor Prophets
God Deserves Your Best
“And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.”
1 Corinthians 2:3-5
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”
Colossians 3:23-24
“Malachi was the last prophet of the Old Testament era. When his ministry ceased, no prophetic voice was heard until John the Baptist arrived on the scene 450 years later.”
Stephen R. Miller
I. Give God Your Best, He Loves You Deeply
“The oracle of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi. ‘I have loved you,’ says the LORD. But you say, ‘How have you loved us?’ ‘Is not Esau Jacob’s brother?’ declares the LORD. ‘Yet I have loved Jacob but Esau I have hated. I have laid waste his hill country and left his heritage to jackals of the desert.’”
Malachi 1:1-3
“If anyone comes to me & does not hate his own father & mother & wife & children & brothers & sisters, yes, & even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.”
Luke 14:26
“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38-39
“…God is love.”
1 John 4:8b
II. Give God Your Best, He Will Not Accept Less
“When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the LORD of hosts…Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you, says the LORD of hosts, & I will not accept an offering from your hand.”
Malachi 1:8,10
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
Romans 12:1
“You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
1 Peter 2:5
III. Give God Your Best, He Promises His Blessing
“For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. But you say, ‘How shall we return?’ Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down a blessing until there is no more need.”
Malachi 3:6-10
What is a Tithe? Tithe means “tenth” & represents the first 10% of my increase that is returned to God. The tithe is predicated on 3 truths…
• Everything I Have Belongs to God:
“The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.”
Psalm 24:1-2
• Everything I Earn is Given by God:
“You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the power to get wealth…”
Deuteronomy 8:18a
• Everything I Need, God has Promised to Provide:
“I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.”
Psalm 37:25
“Woe to you, scribes & Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint & dill & cumin, & have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice & mercy & faithfulness. These you out to have done, without neglecting the others.” Matthew 23:23
“Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble. And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving & receiving, except you only. Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again…And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:14-16, 19
IV. Give God Your Best, He Gave His Best
“Behold I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.”
Malachi 3:1
“He is the radiance of the glory of God & the exact imprint of his nature, & he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.”
Hebrews 1:3-4
“God proved his love on the cross. When Christ hung, and bled, and died it was God saying to the world – I love you.”
Billy Graham
