First - First in Sacrifice

Haggai 1:12-15

“And the LORD said to me, ‘Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: Hear the words of this covenant and do them. For I solemnly warned your fathers when I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, warning them persistently, even to this day, saying, Obey my voice. Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but everyone walked in the stubbornness of his evil heart. Therefore I brought upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did not.” Jeremiah 11:6-8

“I have become a laughing stock all the day; everyone mocks me. For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout, ‘Violence and destruction!’ For the word of the LORD has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. If I say, ‘I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,’ there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.”                                                                                               Jeremiah 20:7b-9

“Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD. Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the LORD’s message, ‘I am with you, declares the LORD.’ And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the King.”                                                                       Haggai 1:12-15

Main Idea - God FIRST means Immediate, Sacrificial Obedience.
There are 3 Essential Elements to Immediate, Sacrificial Obedience:

I. Reverence for God                                                                                                    "Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD.”                               Haggai 1:12

“He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation & wisdom & knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure.”   Isaiah 33:6 (NIV)

“Seldom in history has a spiritual reformation been so immediate & complete... often prophets had met with indifference, mocking, hostility, & even martyrdom ...what was the difference...These people feared the LORD.” Max Anders

II. Presence of God                                                                                                     “Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the LORD’s message, ‘I am with you, declares the LORD.’”                                 Haggai 1:13

“Faith is not believing in spite of evidence, it’s obeying in spite of consequence.”                                                                                                Geoffrey Studdert-Kennedy

When God comes first, the Future will Always be Greater than the Past!

III. Service to God
“And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the King.” Haggai 1:14-15

“And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel...and the spirit of Joshua...and the spirit of all the remnant of the people...”                             Haggai 1:14

“It was not the bluntness of Haggai’s message that wrought the desired result. It wasn’t the appeal to the cold facts of blighted harvests & empty wallets. It wasn’t even the application of the Holy Scriptures to the situation. It was a direct work of the Holy Spirit...an appeal to the spirit by the Spirit.”      J. Phillips

“Then he said to me, ‘This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit says the LORD of hosts.”              Zechariah 4:6

“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”                                                 Galatians 4:4-5

“The church today can learn a lesson from the Jewish remnant of Haggai’s day. Too often we make excuses when we ought to be making confessions and obeying the Lord.”                                                                                    Warren Wiersbe
