First in My Plans - Haggai 1:1-11

Pastor John Welborn

When God comes first, the Future will Always be Greater than the Past!

“Thus says Cyrus king of Persia; The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever is among you of all his people, may his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and rebuild the house of the LORD, the God of Israel, - he is the God who is in Jerusalem...Cyrus the king also brought out the vessels of the house of the LORD that Nebuchadnezzar had carried away from Jerusalem and placed in the house of his gods.”

Ezra 1:2-3, 7

“And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, the priests in their vestments came forward with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the LORD, according to the directions of David king of Israel. And they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks to the LORD, ‘For he is good, for his steadfast love endures for ever toward Israel.’ And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ houses, old men who had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid, though many shouted aloud for joy, so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the sound of the people’s weeping, for the people shouted with a great shout, and the sound was heard far away.”

Ezra 3:10-13

“In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, & to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest: ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.’ Then the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, ‘Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins? Now, therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways. You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes. Thus says the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the LORD. You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? Declares the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house. Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and on all their labors.’”

Haggai 1:1-11

Main Idea - God FIRST means surrendering my plans to embrace His plan.

There are 3 Principles to Putting God First in My Plans:

I. In Every Plan, Someone or Something Must Come First

“In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, & to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest: ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.’ Then the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, ‘Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?”

Haggai 1:1-4

“I never knew a man who was good at making excuses who was good at anything else.”

Benjamin Franklin

“An excuse is merely the skin of a reason stuffed with a lie.”

Billy Sunday

“An excuse is merely a lie you tell yourself to make yourself feel better about justifying a lack of responsibility for your situation.”

II. Any Plan that puts Me First is Destined for Failure

“Now, therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways. You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes.”

Haggai 1:5-6

Planted A Lot, Harvested a Little
Ate, Remained Hungry
Drank, Remained Thirsty
Wore Clothes, Still Cold
Earned Money, Lost it Quickly

“This is all intensely solemn. May reader & writer weigh it well. Undoubtedly, it gives the secret of many failures & disappointments among not only the Jews of old but also Christians today. God cannot bless self-seeking.”

H.A. Ironside

“But seek first the kingdom of God & his righteousness, & all these things will be added to you.”

Matthew 6:33

III. God First in My Plans Requires that I go ALL IN

“Thus says the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

Haggai 1:7-11

“For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.”

John 6:38
