9 to 5: Does God care about My Job? Find Your Place in God’s Story Psalm 127:1
“If you get the story of the world wrong – if, for example, you see life here as mainly about self-actualization and self-fulfillment rather than the love of God – you will get your life response wrong, including the way you go about work.” Timothy Keller

I. God Partners with us in His Creative Work “Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” Psalm 127:1a

“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” Revelation 4:11

“The whole world is good. God made the world and everything in it was good. There are no intrinsically evil parts of the world. Nothing is evil in its origin…You can find this ‘creational good’ in anything.” Timothy Keller

“For everything created by God is good…” 1 Timothy 4:4a

II. God Partners with us in His Redemptive Work “Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” Psalm 127:1b

God’s Command: “And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, ‘You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat....’” Genesis 2:16-17a

Humanity’s Rebellion: “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.” Genesis 3:6

Adam’s Punishment: “And to Adam he said, ‘Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I have commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.’” Genesis 3:17-19

Our Condition: “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned” Romans 5:12

Our Hope: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself & gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, & entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.” 2 Corinthians 5:17-19

“The gospel is the true story that God made a good world that was marred by sin and evil, but through Jesus Christ he redeemed it at infinite cost to himself, so that someday he will return to renew all creation; end all suffering & death; and restore absolutely peace, justice, and joy in the world forever.” Timothy Keller “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God...for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain.” Romans 13:1, 4a

Solomon found that, without the Lord, all work, creative and redemptive, is completely useless and vain! Why?

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

“Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved…For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:9-10, 13
