God Speaks: Major Messages from the Minor Prophets
Consider Your Ways
Haggai and Zechariah

I. Haggai Warned Against Selfishness

"Then the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, ‘Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins? Now, therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts; consider your ways. You have sown much, & harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes. Thus says the LORD of hosts; consider your ways. Go up to the hills & bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it & that I may be glorified says the LORD. You looked for much, & behold, it came to a little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? Declares the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house. Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, & the earth has withheld its produce. And I have called for a drought on the land & the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man & beast, & on all their labors."
Haggai 1:3-11

“Nothing was more important for the Jews than to show that the Lord was at the center of their thoughts and actions, so Haggai directed them to finish rebuilding God’s temple.”
Charles Swindoll

“Haggai’s message makes clear that the people had become preoccupied with their own material interests & had neglected God’s work..selfishly they would rather spend their money on lavish homes than the house of God.”
Trent Butler

“For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
1 Corinthians 3:11

“Why? Declares the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house.”
Haggai 1:9b

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:21

“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous & ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.”
1 Timothy 6:17-19

• It Must be a Priority
• It Must be a Percentage
• It Must be Progressive

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Matthew 6:33

II. Zechariah Cautioned Against Discouragement

“Thus says the LORD of hosts: Behold, I will save my people from the east country and from the west country, and I will bring them to dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in faithfulness and in righteousness.”
Zechariah 8:7-8

“He who counts the stars and calls them by their names is in no danger of forgetting His own children.”
Charles Haddon Spurgeon

III. Selfishness & Discouragement Fade in the Presence of Christ

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey...On that day the LORD their God will save them, as the flock of his people; for like the jewels of a crown they shall shine on his land.”
Zechariah 9:9, 16

“They brought the donkey & the colt and put on them their cloaks, & he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, & others cut branches from the trees & spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him & that followed him were shouting, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
Matthew 21:7-9

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ – by grace you have been saved – and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”
Ephesians 2:4-7

It’s time to Consider Our Ways! Are we selfish & discouraged? It’s Time to Turn Our Eyes on Jesus to find Generosity & Encouragement!
