Preacher: John Welborn

Series: Christmas from the Outside Looking In

Detail:

December 4, 2106      Pastor John Welborn Christmas from the Outside In Christmas through the Eyes of the Ancients Isaiah 7:14, 9:6-7, 11:1-10

“The king was playing ‘power politics’ instead of trusting in the power of God…Ahaz was a frightened man.” Warren Wiersbe
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” Isaiah 26:3
 I. We have Hope because God is with Us  “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14

“All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive & bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’ (which means, God with us).” Matt 1:22-23
II. We have Hope because God is Good  “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.” Isaiah 9:6-7
 • Immanuel is Human: o Child: He came as a baby, helpless & vulnerable o Son: Son of God and Son of Man
 • Immanuel is God: o Wonderful Counselor: literally supernatural in counsel. “This also comes from the LORD of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.” Isaiah 28:29
o Mighty God: He has the power to carry out his plan o Everlasting Father: Literally: Father of eternity o Prince of Peace: Royalty, bringing prosperity & tranquility “For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” John 3:17
III. We have Hope because of God’s Kingdom  “There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch fro his roots shall bear fruit. And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall
kill the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist and faithfulness the belt of his loins. The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples – of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.” Isaiah 11:1-10

“Paul…set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 1:1-4
“In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33b
“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10b
