Be A Man!

1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Where have the men gone?
Crisis of Adolescence:page1image33976512

 - Adolescence used to be 12-18 years of age (today = 12 to 35)
 - i.e. - 30-year-old living with parents, no purpose or plan.

 - i.e. – 45-year-old living on welfare, partying every weekend.
 - Men move out later, marry later, have kids later, and so on...

Crisis of Absence:
 - 33% of children live in a home without their biological father. (57% of black kids, 31%Hispanic and 20%white)
 - Emotional absence is nearly as harmful as physical absence.

‘Absentee fathers are the main drivers behind the biggest social issues of our time. And fatherlessness doesn’t just mean a father who isn’t there; it’s a father who is not engaged.” United Nations Children’s Fund

Crisis of Abuse:
 - 93% of all prison inmates are male.
 - 81% of women report having been sexually assaulted or harassed on at least one occasion.

What is a Man?

“Biblical manhood can be boiled down to five basic principles; 1) Humility before his God, 2) Control of his appetites, 3) Protecting his family, 4) Providing for his family, and 5) Leading his family.”  Wayne Grudem, Theologian

“A real man rejects passivity, accepts responsibility, leads courageously, & expects God’s greater reward.” Robert Lewis, President of Men’s Fraternity

“At the heart of mature masculinity is a sense of benevolent responsibility to lead, provide for, & protect women in ways appropriate to man’s differing relationships.” John Piper, Pastor/Theologian

Main Idea: God Gives Men Everything They Need to Be A Man in Jesus Christ

I. A Man is Proactive- “Be watchful...”

“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a
roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

“Male passivity is a disease that robs a man of his purpose while it destroys marriages, ruins families, & spoils legacies. A passive man doesn’t engage; he retreats. He neglects personal responsibility. At its core, passivity is cowardice.” Dennis Rainey

II. A Man is Firmly Planted

“...stand firm in the faith...”Jesus: He knew the Father’s will, his own purpose & persevered in it!“...he set his face to go to Jerusalem.” Luke 9:51

III. A Man is Growing – “...be strong...”

“Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.”
Winston Churchill

“Courage doesn’t always roar, sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.’” Mary Anne Radmacher

Jesus was Strong: While Jesus was fully God, he was also fully man; he grew & matured similarly to the way we do.

“And the child grew & became strong, filled with wisdom...And Jesus increased in wisdom & in stature & in favor with God & man.” Luke 2:40a, 52

IV. A Man Loves Deeply– “Let all that you do be done in love.”

“Let not steadfast love & faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor & good success in the sight of God & man.” Proverbs 3:3-4

Jesus: “And walk in love, as Christ loved us & gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering & sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:2

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me & I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

“The Christian Gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me, yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me.” Tim Keller

BE A MAN today! God made you to admit you can’t do it on your own, to surrender yourself to Jesus & then to let the perfect man Jesus Christ be a man through you! It’s just that simple! This is how you will be proactive, stand firm, grow & love deeply...You Need Jesus!
